Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine whether social media addiction significantly predicts cyberchondria. In addition, within the scope of this study, it was investigated whether cyberchondria differ significantly according to the frequency of monthly visits to health services and daily social media usage time of adults. The study group consists of 384 adults (196 women, 188 men) residing in Ankara. In order to collect data, the Personal Information Form (PIF), Cyberchondria Severity Scale (CSS-33), and Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS) were applied to the participants. In accordance with the purpose of the study, the relational survey model, one of the quantitative research methods, was used. The results showed that there is a positive and significant relationship between cyberchondria and social media addiction. As a result of the analyses conducted to test to what extent social media addiction predicts cyberchondria, it was concluded that social media addiction was a significant predictor of adults' cyberchondria levels (R2 = .17, p < .01). In addition, it was found that cyberchondria scores increased as the duration of daily social media use increased. And also, the results showed that cyberchondria scores did not differ significantly according to the frequency of monthly visits to health services.
