Storytelling Technique in Psycological Counseling with Children
Kübra Yaşar Yılmaz
Abstract
Today, storytelling technique has become an important technique that is frequently used especially in counseling with children. Child clients use different language than adults. Mental health professionals working with children report that they can establish a stronger therapeutic relationship with their clients when they use metaphors, games, visuals and stories instead of daily language. The storytelling technique is a therapeutic tool that facilitates the client to express his/her feelings and thoughts, which he/she cannot express directly, through the characters in the stories. It is seen that the studies on the storytelling technique, which has become popular with postmodern approaches, are limited in our country. School counselors working with children may encounter resistance when they try to communicate with the child in everyday language. This may prevent the provision of psychological support to the child who needs help. Especially when the necessary support is not provided to children who face difficult experiences, problems such as adaptation problems, learning difficulties, bedwetting may occur. In this study, therapeutic storytelling, the use of storytelling technique in counseling with children and its purposes are discussed. This study is important especially for school counselors working with children, as it gives information about the new applications of storytelling technique in the field, its benefits and ease of use.
